We began a project in January 2025 with Eagles Nest, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting youth and their families. Our goal was to conduct a needs assessment to get a clearer picture of youth mental health needs and services in Waterdown, Ontario.

This project was all about helping Eagles Nest find the best ways to support the community. By gathering information from youth, parents, and community partners, we were able to pinpoint areas for improvement and guide them toward their ultimate goal: providing the best mental health care possible.
The process began with gathering information from various sources, including youth, parents/guardians, and community partners.Using a combination of online surveys, interviews, and in-person facilitated discussions, there were three objectives that guided the needs assessment:
- To understand the local landscape of mental health services available for youth
- To identify assets, barriers, and gaps to accessing mental health services for youth
- To be able to provide evidence-informed recommendations to move towards an ideal future state (i.e., potential solutions or opportunities)
After gathering the data, we used a thematic analysis to find key patterns and themes. This process helped us identify the most effective ways to address the gaps in youth mental health services. We then compiled a final report with clear, actionable recommendations for Eagles Nest to use in their future program planning.
Eagles Nest expressed how valuable the findings were for their upcoming plans. They particularly appreciated that the recommendations validated some of their existing beliefs while also offering fresh perspectives that gave them a clear direction on how to best move forward.
The Eagles Nest team was a pleasure to work with. They provided insightful feedback and were highly engaged and responsive throughout the project. We are excited to see what they do next and wish them all the best in their mission to support their community’s mental health needs!
The Eagles Nest team was also kind enough to share their experience working on this project:
