Building a Better Future: Aligning Organizational & Community Strategies

In the world of planning, both organizations and communities utilize strategies to achieve their goals. While both aim to create positive change, they differ significantly in scope, focus, and implementation. Understanding these differences is crucial for effective leadership and collaboration, particularly when working to improve complex health and social issues including homelessness, mental health and substance use.

Organizational Strategic Plans: A Roadmap for Internal Success

An organizational strategic plan is like a detailed roadmap guiding a specific organization toward its vision. It outlines the organization’s mission, values, and long-term goals, along with the specific strategies and actions it will take to achieve them. This plan is internally focused, concentrating on optimizing the organization’s resources, operations, and performance.

Key characteristics of an organizational strategic plan:

  • Internal focus: It primarily addresses the organization’s internal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis).
  • Specific objectives: It sets clear, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) objectives for the organization.
  • Resource allocation: It outlines how the organization will allocate its resources (financial, human, technological) to achieve its goals.
  • Accountability: It establishes clear lines of accountability for implementing the plan and tracking progress.

Community Strategies: A Collaborative Approach to Shared Goals

A community strategy, on the other hand, takes a broader, collaborative approach. It involves multiple organizations working together towards a common goal that benefits the entire community. This is particularly relevant when addressing complex social issues which often require a coordinated effort across multiple partners including people with lived and living experiences (PWLLE).

Key characteristics of a community strategy:

  • Collective vision: It articulates a shared vision for the community and the desired outcomes related to the specific issue.
  • Multi-organizational collaboration: It involves diverse organizations (nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, community groups) pooling their resources and expertise.
  • Shared goals and objectives: It establishes common goals and objectives that all participating organizations agree to work towards.
  • Joint action plan: It outlines the specific actions each organization will take, how they will coordinate their efforts, and how they will measure collective progress.
  • Community engagement: It actively involves community members in the planning and implementation process, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are addressed.

Bridging the Gap: Aligning Organizational and Community Strategies

While distinct, organizational and community strategies are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they can and should complement each other. Organizations can align their internal strategic plans with the broader community strategy, ensuring their efforts contribute to the collective goal.

For example, an organization providing mental health services to individuals can align its strategic plan with the community’s strategy focused on emergency department diversion. This might involve setting specific objectives related to community partner collaboration, improving service delivery, or advocating for policy changes that support the community’s goals.

Achieving Collective Impact

By understanding the differences between organizational and community strategies, and by aligning them effectively, we can create a powerful force for positive change in communities. This collaborative approach, where organizations and communities work together towards shared goals, is essential for achieving collective impact and building stronger, more resilient communities.
